Mishal: Before I came to Canada, I was really worried about the banking system here. I thought that I couldn’t run away from interest-related account for my money. Alhamdulillah for chequing account the banks are not paying any interest to us.

Muhammad: That’s true. Instead we have to pay for service fee for the account.

Muhammad: Even in Islam, it seems that as if we are discouraged from putting our money in savings account, because it is a leakage that prevents the economy from being in equilibrium. If you keep money for a period of one year, you are required to pay zakah proportionate of total amount saved.

Mishal: I agree with that view. Everything must be in circulation. This will keep the economy in balance, wealth being rotated in society and fuel growth. Interest will only hinder this circulation.

Mishal: I am surprised to see that some of our Muslim brothers, they are so particular about their food, but ignore their financial obligations.

Muhammad: What do you mean?

Mishal: Well, we can see that some of them are so strict in making sure that they eat halal and pure food. They will not go to restaurant that serves halal meals with pork, like Subways and Pizza-Pizza that sell bacon, ham and pepperoni pizza, but at the same time they have tuna sandwich and veggie pizza. At the same time, they are not feeling guilty putting their money in interest-based account.

Muhammad: Well, it’s better if we avoid both.

Mishal: Well said. To me, taking riba is more haram than eating at these places, since God clearly declared war against those who practice riba. We are not eating the haram food, we are still eating halal food. When we put our money in these banks, we know that they also offer interest-based services, but we intentionally choose ones that are interest-rate free.

Muhammad: Let's just hope that one day there'll be Islamic banks, or at least interest-free banks in Canada.

akak tak faham sket tang sini when I read te whole scenario.

Is he trying to say "we intentionally chooses ones that are NOT interest-rate free"

kalau are NOT, I can follow the flow but if he said "are" means opening any acct (be it checking or savings) in the bank is worse haram than eating halal food in restaurant that serves khindzir AS opening an acct in the bank is already consider subahah in riba-banking system.

Kalau mampu simpan duit sendiri tanpa a/c, buatlah. Tapi kebanyakan kita tidak mampu untuk uruskan hidup tanpa a/c bank (mungkin iman kita lemah atau hidup akan susah tanpa a/c bank), jadi kita pilihlah a/c yg tiada interest.

Pasal restoran tu, banyak lagi alternatif lain - cari yg 100% halal, or masak sendiri sebab bebas dari syubhah non-halal ni.
